Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Safe

Your skin, your safety, your questions answered.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are times when your skin often needs the most support and when the rules around what you can and can't have change significantly. At DOSE, we take this seriously.

This page is designed to give you a clear, honest overview of what's safe, what's not, and what we can do for your skin at every stage.

During Pregnancy

When you're pregnant, the general principle is conservative. Many active ingredients and treatment modalities are avoided not because harm has been definitively proven, but because adequate safety data doesn't exist and that's reason enough to avoid them. Your skin can still be genuinely cared for and treated during pregnancy, but the approach is adapted accordingly.

Safe during pregnancy at DOSE:

  • All our facials
  • LED light therapy is non-invasive, no UV, safe across all trimesters
  • Gentle enzyme exfoliation
  • Hydrating and barrier-supporting treatments

Not recommended during pregnancy:

  • Skin needling is not recommended due to limited safety data and the risk of systemic absorption of serums used during treatment
  • Chemical peels containing salicylic acid, high-concentration AHAs, TCA, or resorcinol
  • PRX Plus contains TCA and is not recommended during pregnancy
  • Cosmetic injectables such as wrinkle relaxants, dermal fillers, and skin boosters are contraindicated during pregnancy
  • Rejuran and PRP are not recommended during pregnancy
  • Retinoid-based treatments
  • Treatments involving strong active penetration via any delivery method
  • Any treatment where systemic absorption of active ingredients cannot be ruled out

If you're unsure about a specific treatment not listed here, ask Brittni before booking. She will always give you a straightforward clinical answer.

During Breastfeeding

The rules relax somewhat once you're breastfeeding. Transfer of topical ingredients through breast milk is generally considered low risk, and many treatments that are avoided during pregnancy can be safely reintroduced. That said, a conservative approach is still applied where any uncertainty exists.

Safe during breastfeeding at DOSE:

  • All facials available at DOSE
  • Skin needling is considered safe while breastfeeding; serum selection is adapted to avoid any ingredients with absorption concerns
  • Mild to moderate chemical peels using lactic acid, low-concentration glycolic acid, and enzyme-based formulations
  • PRX Plus can be considered during breastfeeding with appropriate discussion at consultation
  • LED light therapy
  • Enzyme exfoliation and corrective facials at all levels
  • Vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and peptide-based treatments
  • CoolJet™ cold plasma considered safe during breastfeeding

Still not recommended during breastfeeding:

  • Cosmetic injectables such as wrinkle relaxants, dermal fillers, and skin boosters remain contraindicated while breastfeeding
  • Rejuran and PRP are not recommended while breastfeeding
  • High-concentration acid peels (TCA, high-strength salicylic acid, phenol)
  • Retinoid-based treatments
  • Treatments involving significant systemic absorption of active compounds

FAQs

Can I have skin treatments in my first trimester? We recommend waiting until after your first trimester before having any clinical skin treatments, even those generally considered safe. The first trimester is the most critical period of foetal development, and a conservative approach during this time is always advisable. Brittni will confirm the most appropriate timing for you. But all of our Personalised Facials can be customised to pregnancy friendly regardless of how far along you are.

How do I know which treatments are safe for me specifically? Book a consultation and let Brittni assess your individual situation. General guidelines are a starting point, your medical history, medications, trimester, and skin concerns all factor into the final recommendation.

Can I have my regular treatments throughout my whole pregnancy? This depends entirely on what your regular treatments are. Some can continue with adaptation; others need to pause. The best approach is to let Brittni know you're pregnant as soon as possible so your treatment plan can be reviewed and adjusted.

When can I go back to my normal skin treatments after birth? If you're not breastfeeding, most treatments can be reintroduced fairly quickly post-birth. Brittni will advise based on your recovery and skin. If you're breastfeeding, the breastfeeding guidelines above apply for the duration of your feeding journey.

Is LED really safe during pregnancy? Yes. LED therapy uses specific wavelengths of visible light with no UV emission and no thermal risk. It is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding and is used in both cosmetic and medical settings across all populations.

What about my injectable treatments, when can I restart? Cosmetic injectables are contraindicated during both pregnancy and breastfeeding. Most practitioners recommend waiting until you have fully finished breastfeeding before restarting. Brittni will discuss timing with you at your post-breastfeeding consultation.
